Marathon, located on thirteen islands in the Florida Keys, has some of the greatest boating opportunities in the world, including deep-sea, reef, and flats fishing. Its city borders stretch 1200 feet from the land to the water’s edge. Boot Key Harbor is a natural body of water located between Boot Key and Key Vaca and is completely inside Marathon city borders.

Marathon is a very new city, having been founded in 1999, even though the region has been occupied for some time. According to the city and a 2001 Rand McNally road map of the Keys, it stretches from the east end of the Seven Mile Bridge (Mile Marker 47) to the west end of Tom’s Harbor Bridge (Mile Marker 61), omitting the region within Key Colony Beach’s municipal borders. Boot Key, Knight’s Key, Hog Key, Vaca Key, Stirrup Key, Crawl Key, Little Crawl Key, East and West Sister’s Island, Deer Key, Fat Deer Key (excluding the area in Key Colony Beach), Long Point Key, and Grassy Key are among the islands inside the city borders.

The name Marathon may be traced back to the Florida East Coast Railroad’s beginnings. The name originates from railroad employees who worked night and day to construct the railway; they grumbled that “this is turning like a true marathon” because of the constant pace and effort to complete the project, and the term was eventually adopted to name the local train station.

With almost 1,200 wet slips, 1,200 dry slips, and extensive facilities to accommodate transient cruisers, Marathon is one of the Keys’ most marine-friendly communities. Marathon City Marina, known as the “Jewel of the Keys” for cruisers, offers 226 mooring balls and restricted dockage. Mooring balls and dockage can be rented for a day, week, or month. As part of a statewide environmental protection pilot program, there are also dedicated mooring and regulated anchoring areas in Boot Key Harbor. A fee is charged to boats moored on a mooring ball. Two dinghy docks, storage, private showers and restroom facilities, a social center, coin-operated laundry, and parking are among the other amenities.
