Florida City is the city in Miami-Dade County, located at the southernmost point in the South Florida Metropolitan area. As of the last available Census report, the population was estimated at almost 9000. Florida City is a suburb of the Miami metropolitan area and is also a major agricultural area in the county. In 1992, this area was badly hit by Hurricane Andrew, which caused significant damage.

The first families to live in Florida City arrived in 1910, when the area was known as “Detroit”. In 1914, the area was incorporated and was named “Florida City.” Florida City is the most southern city in the United States that is not located on an island, and it is the last stop before entering the Florida Keys. The city is comprised of approximately eight (8) square kilometers of land space.

Florida City is on top of a limestone ridge known as the Miami Rock Ridge. Before the first settlers arrived, the ridge was covered by Dade County Pines, which were destroyed to prepare the land for farming. Farming is what drove the economy of this area in the early 1900s.

The Miami Dade Correctional Facility and the Homestead Correctional Institution are located close to Florida City.

The city is located at the eastern end of the Everglades National Park’s single road, which ends at Flamingo. Florida City is the United States’ southernmost city that is not located on an island. It’s also the last stop north of the Florida Keys on the continent. Florida City is home to the southern terminus of the Florida Turnpike’s Homestead Extension, which connects to U.S. 1 at its junction. The larger Homestead-Florida City area includes the cities of Homestead and Florida City, which are located directly north and east of each other. Redland, Leisure City, Naranja, and Princeton are some of the major unincorporated settlements in the area.

The Miami Art Museum of Dade County, the Miami Science Museum, the Historical Museum of Southern Florida, and the Art Museum of Florida International University are among the institutions in Florida City. These museums give fascinating insights into the history of the area. Washington Park, Roberts Park, and Fasulo Park are all nearby parks. First Pentecostal Church, New Hope Assembly of God, and First Presbyterian Church of Homestead are among the local congregations. The Monkey Jungle and the Miami Metrozoo are two of the city’s many animal parks. The Biscayne National Park Beach, the Everglades National Park, and the Tropical Fun Center are among the other famous places.
