Palmetto Bay is a suburban village located in Miami Dade County, Florida that was incorporated in 2002. The Census conducted in 2000 revealed that the population was 24,469. The United States Census Bureau also revealed that Palmetto Bay has an area of almost nine (9) square miles.
On September 10, 2002, the community formed, taking over the land previously occupied by the census-designated places of Cutler and East Perrine.
This village was once home to the Burger King headquarters which were located on a large and hidden area of land close to the coastline. as of 2007 houses rental offices for several companies. The Village of Palmetto Bay, Fla. Also has its newspapers, The Palmetto Bay News, which is published weekly, and a monthly publication called The Palmetto Bay.
The area is home to a few Miami Dade County Schools including Howard Drive Elementary, Perrine Elementary, and Coral Reef Elementary School. The Charles Deering Estate is located on Palmetto Bay’s Old Cutler Road. It was Charles Deering’s residence until 1927 when he died on the estate. The estate is currently used to hold cultural arts events and may be hired out for private occasions like weddings. The Village of Thalatta has maintained the Thalatta Estate Park, a Mediterranean Revival-style mansion erected in 1926 and now used as a park.

Hurricane Andrew devastated Palmetto Bay and the neighboring South Miami-Dade region in August 1992. Many of Palmetto Bay’s houses and businesses were damaged. The neighborhood has gradually been restored throughout the years. The new residences and buildings were built with concrete walls, unlike the demolished ones, which were composed of wood frame construction. Although many parts of Miami were hit hard by Hurricane Andrew, Palmetto Bay was one of the most hit, and it remains a reminder of the storm’s devastation to this day.
